About Wigan Traditional Martial Arts

If you or a family member is thinking about starting, or going back to Martial arts, we hope our website will provide information that will help you make your decision.

Chief instructor Sensei Robert Carruthers 7th Dan has been practicing karate and Martial Arts for almost 40 years. Bob trained in Taekwondo and Shotokan and joined John Smith’s Bunjinkai school, before opening up his first martial arts Dojo in Cornwall in 1973. He trained in the BKA with such teachers as Danny Conner and Roy Stanhope UKASCO. In the mid Seventies Bob joined the Shobokan School where he trained with founder P.A.J. Handyside. Bob then established his martial arts club in Wigan.

In 2000 the school joined the KYR Bugei Renmei and began to integrate Jujutsu techniques into the style. At a presentation in Dublin Bob was awarded Fifth Dan Renshi by Master Joe Carslake and the Kiai Yamabushi Ryu senior instructors.

We hope that the website will answer questions you may have about training, grading and the styles we train in. Please do not hesitate to contact me. Email Bob Carruthers, I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
