This kata introduces the student for the first time to the concept of
TAI-SABAKI (body shifting).
Heian Nidan: Peaceful kata number 2
- This kata introduces the student for the first time to kicking

In addition several new hand techniques are also introduced for the

of KIBA DACHI (horse riding stance). Also introduced for the first
time is a two handed combination block, in this case a GEDAN BARAI

Tekki Shodan: Iron horse -
The first of the three Tekki katas. This kata was originally called by
it's Okinawan name Naihanchi. Thought to be Chinese in origin this
kata is known for the introduction of several unique inward kicks,
known as the wave kick. It is widely believed that the three Tekki
kata were once linked together and taught as one single kata but that
this kata was then ultimately broken down into three parts for ease of
teaching by Gichin Funakoshi's teacher Master Itosu. Like with mant of
the kata, Gichin Funakoshi changed the name of this kata from
Naihanchi to Tekki Shodan when he introduced the art of karate to
Japan.
Bassai Dai: Penetrating the
fortress - The first of the two katas in the Bassai series, Bassai Dai
is a strong, powerful Kata, and one of the earliest, also called
Passai. The techniques contained are not vastly more difficult than
those already mastered in the Heian Kata, but the implying the concept
of strength and will strong enough to storm a fortress.
Kanku Dai: View the sky -
The first of the two katas in the Kanku series Kanku Dai is one of the
longest katas in Shotokan and takes its name from a Chinese General (Koshokan).
The kata gets it's particular name from the first set of movements in
this kata. Iit has been said that Kanku Dai was Gichin Funakoshi's
favourite kata and one he believed demonstrated Karate's essential
elements.
There are 27 Katas in all, the 9 kyu grade Kata
